Understanding the perils that face our elderly population is an overwhelming concept, even for the most knowledgeable in the field. Our elderly population face situations daily that may make a difference in life or death. Literally, our system of social services fails miserably in providing a level of security for even basic living.
Functionalmed.org was created to serve several purposes in advancing the quality of life in our elderly population. The name itself is a combination of function and medicine, but that is only a fraction of the underlying situations facing the elderly. We have set forth a series of objectives that reach far beyond the realm of functional medicine and the services that are available for the elderly. If we simply look at the definition of medicine, we immediately find that medicine is not limited to the treatment of disease or injury. This is where our objectives start:
- helping people of all ages understand the aging process from birth until death.
- defining quality of life issues and how to improve overall quality.
- changing the current system of health and elderly care delivery.
- enabling a system of maintaining material security in old age.
- understanding social and cultural similarities and differences.
- providing advanced training for caregivers.
- providing credible research data in the economic, scientific, and social environments.
I encourage you to browse this website and return often, as it continues to expand. We must be prepared to accept the inevitable changes that governmental, economic, medical, and social research will produce over the next several decades.
